One thing that might be fiddly with Vista is to get the latest drivers. I Use Everest for that, a real nice app that checks the hardware and gives a list over parts and where to find drivers.

See...that's the thing...being a computer ignoramus, I just don't do fiddling with stuff like that (that is why I don't have the EVE Test Server set up to run). I want to take it out of the box, plug everything in, turn it on, and have it work. Insert CD's/DVD's and have them auto-install. At my age and computer skill level, homey don't play hunting for new drivers and fiddling to get a damn OS to work properly. Me thinks I'll just go with XP, I know that works out of the box...

Well, in most cases what you get on disc with the box will work, in some cases Everest will help you get what you need/the latest, and in those cases not covered you have us :)

Everst is a run-klick-install driver effort, so it is not like you need to be a geek to use it either.

EDIT: not that there is anything wrong with XP.

Well, nothing wrong with picking XP over Vista anyhow ;)

Finally ordered a new computer 8) Went with XP, screw Vista. Games I want to run don't need it, at least for now.

Core Duo 8400 3.0GHz 6MB, 4G RAM, dual GeForce 9500GT 512MB Cards. Not top of the line, but worlds better than what I am running now. And I got it cheap enough, even including a 21in LCD monitor, to not feel guilty possibly upgrading a couple years from now which would be a bit sooner than my usual replacement cycle...

After having problems with my Radeon 3870 card (atikmdag.sys error) :x and after some research it seems it's Vista that is causing the error. So yeah vista sucks, good decision on the XP and congratz on your new computer.

I just read this thread now because it popped up again. First I want to say GREAT choice picking XP over Vista. On the 5 computers I have here (3 are mine) I have XP on 3, Vista on 1 and Ubuntu on 1. XP is by far the most versatile and smooth running compared to the rest. The concerns raised about viruses and DX10, well first off you should be playing EvE not clicking on bad websites and programs that give you viruses. Just use a good free virus scanner such as AntiVir, Avast, or AVG (they all start with A :?: ) and you will be fine. People are too paranoid over viruses its not the OS that downloads the viruses its the user, you just have more options to be infected with on XP haha.

Than DX10 and Crysis, I have a DX10 card and I switched to Vista just for Crysis, framerate sucked. Same hardware using XP and the "tweaked" Very High Settings in Crysis gave me much better framerates. Here is a link to show you the difference in DX10 vs DX9 in Crysis not really as big a deal as they make it out to be CLICKY.

Don't get me wrong Vista has some great toys and features that they did improve, my favorite being much improved and stable networking and browsing. My second favorite is it finds more hardware on install than XP. IMO it was rushed out the door and has more looks than function over XP, wait for "windows 7". Vista runs great on my server because all my server does is run 24/7 giving access to my hard drives nothing else.

Yeah, really looking forward to it...at the very least will finally have a functioning mic, lol! So, some questions:

1) I assume I should do a fresh install of EVE on the new computer? Should I do the base client or the "enhanced graphics" one?

2) Is there anything I need to copy over from my old computer for EVE? What about BM's? Overview Settings?

I prefer playing with premium graphics but thats all personal preference, your machine should run it fine. Best to install the premium and if you don't like it you can turn it off in the options menu.

Bookmarks are saved no matter what computer your login on however any folders you made and put your bookmarks into will be gone, so you will have to make those over again. Same goes for your address book. Try this if you want to clean your settings on your old computer so you can transfer over overview settings, however if you hate dealing with computer things this might be too much for you to fiddle with. Someone else here might have better experience with this than me for transferring client data.
